The Test Engineer will work with external suppliers and internal teams to define all the test requirements of the production engine. You will act as primary contact point for all engine test cell activities across Caudwell Marine to ensure the development, knowledge, and commission of our initial and ongoing products.
You will support the Manufacturing Operations and Engineering Design in identifying and advising on testing solutions to meet test cell cycle requirement, quality targets and our customer needs.
Once appointed you will report to the Test & Development Manager.
Main Responsibilities:
Validate the operation of diesel outboards in a test cell environment.
Conduct engine testing to support specific market development programs.
Identify and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults, working collaboratively with the Engineering team to develop and implement effective solutions.
Perform servicing, hardware changes, and necessary repairs to ensure the engine's functionality.
Operate the test cell using a combination of automated test cycles and the Vessel Control System.
Progress to more complex testing tasks with guidance from Engineering teams.
Ensure the Unit Under Test, test equipment, hardware and software within the test cell are properly maintained and optimised for performance.
Act as the first line of quality control by monitoring and validating test data to ensure accurate results.
Analyse test data, draw meaningful conclusions, and publish a test report to provide insights to influence design decisions.
Log, monitor, and re-test all defects identified during testing, maintaining detailed records.
Liaise effectively with Engineers, Supervisors, supporting staff, and suppliers on technical matters.
Escalate issues that may impact project scope, quality, or timelines.
Ensure adherence to all Health & Safety and quality standards.
Identify and implement initiatives to reduce waste and improve efficiency in testing operations.
Ensure all test measurement devices are operational, calibrated, and meet quality standards.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to measurement systems, instrumentation and equipment, contributing to continuous improvement and to maintain high standards.
Set up and operate measurement equipment for investigative, experimental and validation testing.
Stay updated on the latest design revisions and proactively coordinate with Engineering and Test teams to maintain information accuracy.
Conduct hazard analysis, risk assessments, and DFMEA for components and systems as required.
Support problem-solving and root cause analysis efforts related to measurement systems and testing equipment.
Previous Experience:
Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in engine testing, validation, or development, ideally within the marine, automotive, or powertrain sectors.
Experience with working in a test cell environment, including setup, operation, and troubleshooting.
Experience working with advanced diagnostic tools, software, and hardware.
Competent level of experience with Microsoft Office applications.
Strong experience in test data acquisition, instrumentation, validation, analysis and diagnostics to inform engineering decisions.
Ability to communicate externally & internally at all levels, with focus on technical items.
Experience working within multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, technicians, and suppliers.
Worked in a Small, Medium Enterprise (SME) and can demonstrate the ability to ‘roll their sleeves up’ and personally get things done as part of a small team.

Qualifications:
Mechanical Engineering Degree or HND preferred
Additional Information:
Location: Lowestoft, Suffolk
Salary Range: £45,000 - £55,000 depending on experience
