The role of AI in HR

Threat or Time-Saving Ally?

If you work in HR or manage a team, chances are you’ve seen the headlines: “AI is here and it’s coming for your job.”

For many with HR responsibilities it’s a subject that naturally raises real concerns and one that will be debated for some time to come, because no one yet knows what the impact will be.

Could artificial intelligence eventually replace even the human elements of HR? Or is it simply the latest in a long line of tools designed to lighten the load and make our working lives easier?

AI is already woven into many everyday HR tasks — from applicant tracking systems that shortlist CVs, to smart assistants that prompt employees to complete onboarding or update their details. As technology evolves at an ever-faster pace, more of our day-to-day admin will be picked up by automation.

The dilemma is clear: how do you stay relevant and indispensable, while welcoming tools designed to take work off your plate?

Where AI Is Already Doing the Work
AI is behind many of the features HR and team managers already use and enables them to:
  • Write job descriptions faster – with smart suggestions or templates generated by AI tools.
  • Screen CVs quickly – scanning and shortlisting applications based on keywords, experience, or qualifications.
  • Automate admin and reminders – from chasing unsigned documents to nudging managers about upcoming reviews.
  • Answer common questions via chatbots that respond to support issues such as holiday entitlement calculations or policy queries.
  • Spot patterns in data – like repeated short-term absences or trends in employee feedback.
  • Summarise survey results – turning open-text answers into digestible reports.

AI tools won’t do the thinking for you but they will take care of much of the mundane and routine work, giving you time and space to bring your experience to the areas that drive real impact: supporting people, solving problems and building a better workplace.

Why People Still Need People
While AI can handle routine admin and speed up tasks, the good news is that it can’t replace the human qualities which make HR work truly effective: experience, common sense, instinct, emotional intelligence, communication skills, judgment and discretion. You know your team best, giving you the ability to solve problems in a way that reduces the risks.

Between shifting work patterns, rising stress levels and tight business pressures, HR is still the factor holding it all together — balancing employees’ challenges with what the organisation needs.

Some of the most important aspects of your role still need a person, not a process:
  • Building trust – staff won’t confide in a chatbot about burnout, team or personal issues. If they do, perhaps it’s time for them to come into the office more!
  • Coaching and feedback – knowing when to encourage, when to challenge, and what tone works best for each individual.
  • Negotiating grey areas – where policy meets real-life nuance, like flexible working requests or sensitive absence.
  • Shaping culture – creating a workplace that feels fair, respectful and motivating isn’t something AI can automate.
  • Balancing leadership and empathy – especially in difficult conversations, team dynamics, or change management.

Making AI Work For You
AI won’t be edging HR managers out any time soon — but it will help move the sector forward.

For HR managers and team leaders, the opportunity lies in using AI to handle routine tasks that need minimal oversight, freeing you to focus your skills where they matter most.

The challenge now is working out how best to use it: where to lean into automation, and where to double down on the human touch.

The more confidently you embrace AI for the tasks it’s built to handle, the more real value you’ll add to your role. No algorithm can do what you can — understand context, build trust, and bring discernment to complex situations.
