Accident Logbook - a Summary

Recording Accidents in the Workplace.

If a workplace accident happens, UK businesses have legal responsibilities to report and record them correctly.

Failing to do so can lead to serious consequences, from legal penalties to increased workplace risks.

In certain circumstances, employers must report to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR.) To help your reporting procedures, you’ll be able to see guidance and reporting requirements by clicking the link provided when you log an accident via the WorkSmarter platform. HSE reports must be made within 10 days.

If your business has more than 10 employees, you must keep an accident book under social security law.

Even when there’s no legal obligation to report, it’s important to record the incident so that the root cause can be investigated and any preventative measures put in place. This means you’ll be better able to identify patterns, help prevent future accidents, support risk assessments and compliance, and deal with any potential insurance claims.

Use WorkSmarter’s online Accident Logbook service to record workplace accidents instantly, compliantly and with no fuss, whether a report needs to be made to HSE or not.

Don’t forget that WorkSmarter’s HR platform also lets you assign staff safety roles including First Aider, via their employee profile. When annual leave is requested, you’ll receive an alert so you can ensure adequate cover remains.
