COVID-19: Self-isolation regime is now over in England

The end of Covid restrictions in England, as country enters into the new era of personal responsibility

On 24 February 2022, the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Self-Isolation etc) (Revocation) (England) Regulations 2022 (SI 2022/161) (Revocation Regulations) came into force. 
 
The Revocation Regulations revoke the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Self-Isolation) (England) Regulations 2020 (SI 2020/1045) which set out legal requirements to self-isolate in England, including the requirement to self-isolate on testing positive for COVID-19. 
 
Further to the government's announcement of its strategy for living with COVID-19 in England, it is understood that non-legally binding guidance will be issued advising those testing positive for COVID-19 to stay at home and that this guidance will be in place until 1 April 2022. Thereafter, those with COVID-19 symptoms will be encouraged to exercise personal responsibility. 
 
The Revocation Regulations also revoke the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) (No 3) Regulations 2020 (SI 2020/750) which give local authorities in England powers to impose restrictions on specific premises, planned events and open spaces in local areas, to mitigate local COVID-19 outbreaks. Those Regulations had previously been extended and had been due to expire on 24 March 2022 but have now ended early.
