In a statement made to the House of Commons on 19 January 2022, the Prime Minister announced the lifting of several restrictions in England that were brought in when England moved to Plan B of the COVID-19 Response: Autumn and Winter Plan 2021 in December 2021 in response to the Omicron variant.

 

The following are of relevance for employers: 

 

  • With effect from 19 January 2022, the work from home guidance has been removed. It is suggested that people speak to their employers about arrangements for returning to the office and indeed the government has 'actively encouraged' employers to do so.  

  • With effect from 27 January 2022, there will be no legal requirement to wear a face covering anywhere. However, the government suggests that face coverings continue to be used in enclosed or crowded places, particularly when people are coming into contact with persons they do not normally meet.  In addition, with effect from 27 January 2022, venues and events will no longer be required by law to check visitors' NHS COVID Pass. The NHS COVID Pass can still be used on a voluntary basis.

 

The legal requirements to self-isolate for those who test positive for COVID-19 and for unvaccinated close contacts of positive cases currently remain. However, it is expected that all self-isolation restrictions will end on 24 March 2022, with the possibility of this date being brought forward if supported by data. This will also mean that payment of statutory sick pay (SSP) for those self-isolating will cease.
