Pensions Regulator resumes spot checks

The Pensions Regulation (TPR) has resumed auto-enrolment spot checks following the pandemic

The Pensions Regulator (TPR) is again performing auto-enrolment compliance spot checks across the UK, visiting employers suspected of breaching their workplace pensions duties. 

It is understood that businesses in Greater Manchester, Nottingham, Greater London and Belfast will be visited first of all, following previous inspections in the respective areas.   Spot check inspections will then proceed to other parts of the UK.  
 
The short notice inspections were previously halted following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic but have now resumed after COVID restrictions were lifted earlier this year. Joe Turner, TPR's Head of Compliance and Enforcement, disclosed that a majority of UK employers continued to meet their pensions obligations during the pandemic. However "where we are aware that an employer is failing to do the right thing, we will take action to protect savers, including on-site inspections".
 
As well as auto-enrolment compliance, the inspection teams also investigate scheme administrative errors, non-compliance using real-time information (RTI) data shared by HMRC and whistleblowing.

TPR have a wide range of powers where they discover non-compliance, ranging from working with employers to assist them, to issuing improvement notices to - in the most serious cases - criminal prosecution.
